Die Partie zwischen den Niederlanden und Brasilien bildete den Auftakt der Viertelfinalrunde bei der FIFA Fussball-WM Südafrika 2010™. Die Niederländer gerieten durch ein Tor von Robinho früh in Rückstand, drehten jedoch die Partie in der zweiten Halbzeit durch zwei Tore von Wesley Sneijder. Brasilien beendete das Spiel mit zehn Mann.

Hintergrund
Die beiden Teams trafen zum vierten Mal bei einer WM-Endrunde aufeinander, und zum zweiten Mal im Viertelfinale. 1994 in den USA hatte Brasilien die Niederlande mit Stars wie Dennis Bergkamp, Ronald Koeman und den De-Boer-Zwillingen auf dem Weg zum vierten Weltmeistertitel besiegt. Vier Jahre später, 1998 in Frankreich, setzte sich die Seleção erneut gegen Oranje durch, dieses Mal im Halbfinale.
Auch ohne den verletzten Innenverteidiger Joris Mathijsen bauten die Niederländer im Turnier ihre Siegesserie auf fünf Spiele aus. Vor der Partie gegen Brasilien hatten sie die drei Gruppenspiele gegen Dänemark, Japan und Kamerun gewonnen und sich im Achtelfinale gegen die Slowakei durchgesetzt. Für die Brasilianer war erneut im Viertelfinale Endstation, wie schon vier Jahre zuvor bei der FIFA Fussball-WM Deutschland 2006™.
Spielverlauf
Die Fans im Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth mussten nicht lange auf den Führungstreffer Brasiliens warten. Nach nur neun Minuten überraschte Felipe Melo die Innenverteidigung der Niederländer mit einem perfekten Steilpass auf Robinho, der die Kugel an Maarten Stekelenburg vorbei ins Netz beförderte. Es sah so aus, als würde die Seleção das Heft fest in die Hand nehmen und den weiteren Verlauf der Partie bestimmen.
Und hätte Stekelenburg nicht eine ganze Reihe starker Paraden gezeigt, wären die Niederländer sicher mit mehr als nur einem Tor Rückstand in die Pause gegangen. Doch acht Minuten nach der Pause glich Sneijder für die Niederlande aus. Sein eigentlich als Flanke gedachter Ball streifte den Kopf von Felipe Melo und flog weiter ins Netz.
Kurz danach krönte Sneijder seine brillante Leistung mit seinem zweiten Tor. Robben brachte einen Eckball auf den ersten Pfosten herein, den Kuyt per Kopf verlängerte, so dass Sneijder mitten vor dem Tor nur noch den Kopf hinhalten musste, um die Kugel ins Netz von Julio César zu befördern. Fünf Minuten später musste Brasilien einen weiteren Schlag hinnehmen, als Felipe Melo nach einem Tritt gegen das Bein des am Boden liegenden Robben des Feldes verwiesen wurde.

Der Star
Nachdem er für seine ersten beiden Tore in Südafrika vier Spiele und 355 Minuten benötigt hatte, verdoppelte Wesley Sneijder seine Ausbeute in der Partie gegen Brasilien innerhalb von nur 15 Minuten. Die beiden Tore gegen den fünffachen Weltmeister bedeuteten dem Mittelfeldspieler sehr viel. Zu seinem Siegtreffer in der 68. Minute sagte er: "Ich musste einfach nur den Kopf hinhalten. Das Tor war ein großartiges Gefühl."

Und danach?
Der Sieg gegen Brasilien stärkte die Überzeugung der Niederländer, dass sie es bis ins Finale schaffen würden – und so kam es dann auch. Im Halbfinale erzielte Sneijder sein fünftes Turniertor, verhalf Oranje damit zu einem 3:2-Sieg gegen Uruguay und somit zum dritten Einzug ins WM-Finale, nach 1974 und 1978. Hier allerdings erwiesen sich die Spanier als zu stark. Andres Iniesta bescherte den Iberern mit seinem Tor in der Verlängerung den Titel. Auf brasilianischer Seite endete mit der Viertelfinalniederlage die erste Amtszeit Dungas als Nationaltrainer. Er übernahm das Team allerdings nach der FIFA Fussball-WM 2014™ wieder, bei der Brasilien im eigenen Land auf Platz vier landete.
