Schweden steht erstmals seit fast einem Vierteljahrhundert wieder im Viertelfinale einer FIFA WM-Endrunde. Emil Forsberg erzwang in Sankt Petersburg mit seinem Schuss einen knappen 1:0-Sieg gegen die Schweiz.
Die Skandinavier verlegten sich von Beginn an auf ihre bisher bewährte Erfolgsformel: tief stehen, solide verteidigen und mit schnellen Kontern zuschlagen. Die Schweizer waren die aktivere Mannschaft mit mehr Ballbesitz, doch letztlich erwies sich die Spielweise der Schützlinge von Trainer Janne Andersson als erfolgreicher. Von den insgesamt recht wenigen Chancen hatten die Schweden die besseren.
Mit zunehmender Spieldauer wurden die Gelegenheiten besser und die Entscheidung bahnte sich an. Doch zunächst wurden auf beiden Seiten noch Chancen vergeben oder vereitelt, zum Teil durchaus mit etwas Glück. Letztlich allerdings hatte das Glück auch beim Siegtreffer seine Hände im Spiel.
Forsberg, der bisher seinen Vorschusslorbeeren als Schwedens größter Star nicht gerecht wurde, hatte an der Strafraumgrenze viel zu viel Platz und zog ab. Sein Schuss wurde von Manuel Akanji genau in den Winkel abgefälscht. Da es das einzige Tor der Partie blieb, steht Schweden nun im Viertelfinale.
