Neymar erzielte gegen Mexiko sein sechstes Tor bei FIFA Fussball-Weltmeisterschaften™, und der eingewechselte Roberto Firmino markierte kurz vor Schluss das 2:0 der Brasilianer, die damit ins Viertelfinale der WM einziehen.
In den ersten 20 Minuten setzte "El Tri" die Hintermannschaft der Südamerikaner gehörig unter Druck, doch dann fand Tites Team langsam ins Spiel, spielte mehr Torchancen heraus und machte den gefährlicheren Eindruck.
Alledings mussten die Brasilianer sich bis nach der Halbzeitpause gedulden. Kurz nach dem Wiederanpfiff, in der 51. Minute, hatte Neymar dann Grund zum Feiern. Nach einer gefährlichen, flachen Hereingabe von Willian rutschte er in den Ball und vollendete aus kurzer Distanz. Brasilien arbeitete weiterhin Torchancen heraus, und kurz vor Schluss jagte Firmino den Ball dann am langen Pfosten zum 2:0 in die Maschen. Diesmal hatte Neymar die Vorarbeit geleistet.

Mexiko war in den ersten 15 Minuten viel aggressiver, doch darauf waren die Brasilianer eingestellt. Sie ließen sich nicht aus der Ordnung bringen und waren über weite Strecken der Partie die spielbestimmende Mannschaft, auch wenn die Ballbesitz-Statistik dies nicht unbedingt widerspiegelt. Die hochtalentierten Einzelspieler der "Seleção" waren ebenfalls ein wichtiger Faktor für die größere Effektivität im Angriff. Mexiko kämpfte tapfer gegen die Brasilianer, musste sich am Ende jedoch gegen das bessere Team geschlagen geben. Die Mexikaner wollten möglichst schnell in Führung gehen und dann den Spielrhythmus bestimmen. Doch das Tor wollte einfach nicht gelingen, und schließlich stellten sich Erschöpfungserscheinungen ein. Nach dem Gegentor kämpften die Mexikaner zwar weiter, machten aber nie wirklich den Eindruck, den Ausgleich schaffen zu können. Allerdings verhinderte Guillermo Ochoa bis zur Schlussphase ein zweites Tor der Brasilianer.
