In einer Partie, die bis zum Schluss spannend blieb, setzte sich Kroatien in Rostow mit 2:1 gegen Island durch, sicherte sich damit den Gruppensieg in Gruppe D der FIFA Fussball-Weltmeisterschaft Russland 20018™ und schickte den Gegner nach Hause. Die Blicke gingen bei dieser Partie auch immer wieder nach Sankt Petersburg, wo es im Duell zwischen Argentinien und Nigeria ebenfalls um alles ging.
Die Isländer verkauften sich teuer. Obwohl sie wussten, dass sie nach dem 1:0 der Argentinier kaum noch Chancen hatten, gingen sie in die Offensive. In den letzten zehn Minuten der ersten Halbzeit spielten sie vier klare Chancen heraus. Ein Versuch von Alfred Finnbogasson verfehlte das Tor nur knapp, und dann rettete Lovre Kalinić im kroatischen Tor die Null.
In der 53. Minute gingen die Schützlinge von Zlatko Dalić dann durch einen schönen Rechtsschuss von Milan Badelj in Führung. Ingason brachte mit einem Kopfball die Latte zum Erbeben und Bjarnason vergab eine "goldene Chance".
Dann verwandelte Sigurdsson einen Elfmeter, und die isländischen Fans waren kaum noch zu halten. Am Ende waren sie nach dem 2:1-Sieg Argentiniens nur ein Tor vom Weiterkommen entfernt, doch Ivan Perišić machte in der 90. Minute nach einem Konter alle Hoffnungen zunichte.

Die Isländer dürfen wirklich stolz auf ihren Auftritt gegen Kroatien sein. Zwar traten sie mit einem geschwächten Team an, doch auch diesem mangelte es nicht an Talenten, wie bei dem Tor deutlich zu erkennen war. Der Plan Hallgrimssons, der mit guter Organisation die Angriffe der Kroaten unterbinden wollte, ging auf. Doch bei einer WM muss man einfach die sich bietenden Chancen nutzen, und Island hat zu viele davon vergeben. So hat es zum Weiterkommen nicht gereicht.

Wenn eine Mannschaft so viele Umstellungen vornimmt wie die Kroaten – nämlich neun an der Zahl – ist die Abstimmung in der Defensive nicht leicht. So hatte Island seine Chancen, obwohl Kroatien gut in die Partie gestartet ist und auch viel Ballbesitz hatte. Zwei großartige Abschlüsse von Milan Badelj und Ivan Perišić brachten den "Vatreni" schließlich den Sieg und noch einmal drei Punkte. Ein weiterer hervorragender Auftritt Kroatiens!

Milan Badelj eröffnete den Torreigen mit einem schönen Tor. Er befand sich zwar in einer guten Position, doch der Ball war schwer zu kontrollieren. Darüber hinaus harmonierte er im Mittelfeld hervorragend mit Luka Modrić.
