In einem der bisher spannendsten Spiele bei dieser FIFA U-20-Weltmeisterschaft 2019 hat sich Mali gegen Saudiarabien mit 4:3 durchgesetzt und damit die Chance aufs Weiterkommen gewahrt.
Nach der 0:2-Niederlage zum Auftakt gegen Frankreich erwischten die Saudis gegen die Afrikaner einen Start nach Maß. Feras Albrikan (9.) und Hassan Altambakti per Strafstoß (20.) schossen ihr Team vermeintlich früh auf die Siegerstraße, während Mali überraschenderweise große Probleme in der Vorwärtsbewegung hatte. Kurz vor der Pause brachte Abdulrahman Alshammari mit einem groben Fehler die Afrikaner allerdings wieder ins Spiel, Sekou Keita traf zum Anschluss.
Der zweite Abschnitt war an Dramatik kaum zu überbieten. Ibrahima Kone (54.) erzielte den Ausgleich, doch Khalid Alghannam gelang die erneute Führung, die Boubacar Traore 20 Minuten vor dem Ende wieder egalisierte. In der Nachspielzeit markierte Mohamed Camara den 4:3-Endstand.
Während Mali mit nun vier Punkten auf Rang zwei der Tabelle der Gruppe E steht, droht Saudiarabien (0 Punkte) das Aus nach der Vorrunde.
