Zum dritten Mal in Folge werden Honduras und Mexiko die Nord-, Mittelamerika- und Karibik-Zone beim Olympischen Fussballturnier der Männer vertreten. Und wie schon 2012 in London und 2016 in Rio de Janeiro geht Mexiko als Sieger der CONCACAF-Qualifikation an den Start.
Die Mexikaner wollen den Triumph von London 2012 wiederholen, als Oribe Peralta, Marco Fabian, Raul Jimenez, Hector Herrera, Javier Aquino und Co. im Wembley-Stadion die Goldmedaille holten und El Tri als erster Vertreter der CONCACAF-Zone den Olympiasieg feiern konnte.
Honduras qualifizierte sich durch einen 2:1-Sieg gegen die USA im Halbfinale des Turniers. Während die Stars & Stripes zum dritten Mal in Folge bei den Olympischen Spielen zuschauen müssen, festigen die Catrachos ihren Status als zweitbestes Team der Region. Im anderen Halbfinale feierte Mexiko einen 2:0-Sieg gegen Kanada.

El Tri ließ bereits zu Beginn des Turniers keine Zweifel an den Ambitionen aufkommen. Im Auftaktspiel gegen den Turnierdebütanten Dominikanische Republik trug Sebastian Cordova einen Hattrick zum klaren 4:1-Sieg bei.
In der zweiten Partie gegen Costa Rica ließen die Schützlinge von Jaime Lozano beim glatten 3:0-Sieg ebenfalls nichts anbrennen. Mit einem 1:0-Sieg gegen die USA schlossen die Mexikaner die Gruppenphase ab. Im Halbfinale gegen die starken Kanadier zeigte das Team eine weitere Steigerung und siegte durch zwei Tore in der zweiten Halbzeit.
- Statistik: Mexiko ist mit insgesamt acht Siegen Rekordmeister der CONCACAF-Olympia-Qualifikation der Männer.

Nicht einmal Mexiko kann vier Olympia-Teilnahmen in Folge vorweisen. Honduras hingegen hat die CONCACAF-Zone bereits 2008 in Peking (als CONCACAF-Champion), 2012 in London (Viertelfinale) und 2016 in Rio de Janeiro (Halbfinale) vertreten. Werden es die Catrachos in Tokio bis ins Endspiel am 7. August im International Stadium von Yokohama schaffen?
- Statistik: Nachdem sich Honduras bis Sydney 2000 kein einziges Mal qualifiziert hatte, verpasste das Team seitdem nur eine einzige Auflage, nämlich die Spiele von Athen 2004.
